While she is smart and graceful, constantly proving to be one step ahead of her enemies, her most noteworthy quality is her motherhood. She maintains the perfect balance of upholding her duties as Queen, while going above and beyond her role as a mother. Here are a few reasons why Queen HwaRyeong should be considered for mother of the year. This post will contain a few spoilers.
1. Accepting Of Her Sons’ Preferences
Considering previous historical K-Dramas, it wouldn’t be a surprise if Queen HwaRyeong pushed her sons toward a certain path. However, from the very beginning, she has shown to be accepting of her sons’ dreams and preferences. She fully understands their limits and capabilities, knowing when to step in to guide them. This is most exemplified in her reaction to Grand Prince GyeSung (Yoo SeonHo) secretly dressing up as a woman. Although Queen HwaRyeong is initially shocked, she is quick to offer her support towards GyeSung’s choices. She assures him that he will always be her precious son — and that’s all any child could ever ask for.
2. A Mother To All The Princes
Queen HwaRyeong is a busy person, from completing her royal duties around the palace to uncovering the truth behind the Crown Prince’s death. It wouldn’t be strange if she chose to focus on only her children. Yet she shows that her motherly love and compassion is not limited to her biological sons, but readily available for all princes.
She offers heaps of support to the other princes, whether it’s in the form of a hearty meal or encouragement to embrace their vulnerabilities. Queen HwaRyeong knows when to be strict and firm, while bringing a warmth that only a mother can provide.
3. Comforts And Advises Royal Concubines
With all the scheming that goes on in the palace, it can be difficult to know who is truly on your side. It seems that every royal concubine is only looking out for their son. But who can blame them, since the seat of the crown prince is such a coveted position. Despite this, Queen HwaRyeong shows that she’s overflowing grace and can be a source of strength for the royal concubines. She maintains the perfect balance of showing them tough love, while providing useful advice on how to be a loving mother. She doesn’t stop at just words, as she becomes an example of compassion through her actions too. In the end, her genuine nature causes two concubines to stand by her side as allies instead of foes. Queen HwaRyeong is a role model across the board, as both Queen and mother.
4. Supportive Of Sons’ Romantic Interests
There are many K-Dramas where the mother does not support their child’s love interest at all. But if there’s one thing that we’ve learned, it’s that Queen HwaRyeong is not like most mothers. Although she might show initial resistance, she accepts her sons choices, even when it comes to love.
This is most especially true for Grand Prince MuAn (Yoon SangHyeon). Despite falling in love with someone outside of a noble family, upon witnessing their sincerity, Queen HwaRyeong offers her support and guidance. This is also the case for newly appointed Crown Prince SungNam (Moon SangMin) and Crown Princess Yoon CheongHa (Oh YeJu).
